Charlie Puth has explained that the lyrics to “That’s Hilarious” are based on “the worst breakup of (his) life,” an incident that happened in 2019. Usually when it comes to lyrics like this, we come across a vocalist who can’t get over the disturbing emotions that tend to be a part and parcel of such breakups. And well, in a roundabout way, that’s the case with “That’s hilarious.”
However, the truth of the matter is that many times after being dumped, as seems to be similar to what Charlie went through, a person can be heartbroken. But there is also this feeling of revenge that develops. In other words, that less altruistic side of our character can wait for the day when our ex is so lonely and distraught over our absence that he longs to have us back.
To reiterate, that’s more or less a common emotion in such situations, namely wanting the lover who wronged us to suffer emotionally. And in this case, the vocalist lets the petty side of him come to the fore in the lyrics.
So here in the lyrics, we witness Charlie basically making fun of the recipient, his ex, who is trying “badly” to get back together with him. In fact, she finds it hard to believe, or “hilarious” as she put it, that she’s putting in so much effort in the first place.
This is not just because she “didn’t love him when she had him”. But also in her new release, she is changing the situation as if it was Charlie who caused her breakup. So it’s like she’s up to the old tricks of hers, so to speak. But more or less in defense of the recipient, Puth hints that the reason she proved to be such a toxic lover is because when he went out with her, she was on the rebound, which apparently she may be again even now.
Honestly, there’s a lot going on in this song. Yeah, it does read like a romantic revenge fantasy to some extent, meaning the vocalist enjoys his nasty ex now trying to maneuver her back into his life. But it’s also not necessarily like he’s relaxing here and now. Instead, he can acknowledge that, emotionally and psychologically, his past relationship with the recipient “took a year out of his fucking life” that he may never be able to get back.
According to the artist, listening to this song always makes him think of a very dark chapter in his life when he couldn’t let go of a sentimental partner. Furthermore, he stated that this is “the most difficult song” he has ever written.
When I listen to it, it brings me back to the hardest time in my life when I couldnāt let somebody go. It makes me sad, which I never am on here, but I hope you love it. Donāt give your heart to someone whoās still got a broken one.
On March 23, 2022 Charlie announced on TikTok āThatās Hilariousā being the second single off his third-studio album, Charlie. In his TikTok, Charlie expressed,
Iām really excited for the song to come out but, you know, every time I hear it, Iām kind of brought back to a time that was really, really challenging in my life.
