The biggest German Ballermann hit of the 2022 holiday season sings about a beautiful bawd called Layla. A bawd or madam is the person who keeps a house of prostitution.

The name “Ballermann” originates from the Ballermann 6 beach club in Mallorca, but is used to generally refer to the region nearby which is frequented by German tourists. For this kind of holidays, a certain type of pop music (or Schlager music) emerged which mainly talks about alcohol, party and sex.

As is quite common with German Ballermann songs, the lyrics aren’t really profound, but are mainly created to be catchy and easy to sing along. Therefore, the chorus is carried by the “la” syllable of the name “Layla.” The song was written by Schürze in 2021. Later, he found a collaboration partner with DJ Robin, well-known DJ on Mallorca, and purposely released the song at the beginning of the holiday season in 2022.

“Layla” was released in March 2022 and debuted in May 2022 on No. 72 in the German charts. The song quickly became a Ballermann hit when the 2022 holiday season started in June and German vacationers were able to party on Mallorca for the first time since 2019. However, the success of the song was not limited to the Ballermann and its associated music scene – in addition to Mallorca, it was played very often at local village and folk festivals in particular. “Layla” reached No. 3 on June 10, before charting at No. 1 for several consecutive weeks. The song is the first Ballermann hit that ever made it to No. 1 in the German charts.

The huge success of the song was also expressed by the fact that international DJs Alan Walker or Timmy Trumpet played the song and its le Shuuk remix on festivals.

Due to the huge success, various controversies arose about the song. The text of the song is criticized by many people as sexist, especially since the woman being sung about is objectified in the chorus. The song received its first critical attention in June 2022 from the Hessian Jusos (Youth organisation of the party SPD) after it was played on the party conference of the Hessian Young Union (Youth organisation of the party CDU). In July 2022, further controversy arose when the city of Würzburg banned the song from the Kiliani folk festival.

Singer Schürze commented on the criticism as follows:

“If you run through the whole story in your head and also watch our official music video, there is a man playing Layla. ‘Cause we’re not trying to bring sexism into it in any way.

Dominik de Leon, co-founder of the label Summerfield Records, which released “Layla”, also commented on the controversy surrounding the song:

“The song is about a beautiful woman, the “bawd”, and is anything but politically correct. We know that a song needs a catchy melody and a theme that one either resonates with or that polarizes.

DJ Robin also spoke later after the controversy intensified. To BILD, he said the following:

“The song “Layla” is not about a prostitute, it’s about a bawd. She looks after the prostitutes and runs the whorehouse. Therefore, there is no sexism in the song. People used to sing “scandal in the restricted area” [German song from 1981] or “we’re going to the whorehouse in Barcelona” [German song from 2013]. So we can’t quite understand the discussion. Everyone can have their opinion, but in every German rap song the lyrics are worse. Nobody gets upset about that.
